Are the STEAM Studio Sessions in person or online?
All of the STEAM Studio sessions are fully online experiences. Students will interact with NIU STEAM educators twice a week via live online classes and work on projects at home.
Do potential students need to be residents of Illinois?
No, we have students from across the United States and from overseas.
Does my student have to have their camera on to participate in the sessions?
No, but we have found that students that use a camera and participate online have a better experience.
Does a student have to be present at every live online experience?
Each STEAM Studio session has a live class session twice a week. We recommend that you attend each live session, however, the live classes are recorded for students to rewatch or access later.
Do the sessions need to be taken in order?
Each STEAM Studio series (e.g. Rube Goldberg 1, 2, & 3) is designed so that a student’s skill will progress with each session. However, it is possible to sign up for just one in the series and still have a fun learning experience.
My student attended summer camp. Is this different?
The STEAM Studio sessions are based on our online summer camp programs from Summer 2020. So, if a student attended a specific summer camp, such as Make Your Art Move, they might have a similar experience in the STEAM Studio. However, we are always making changes and modifications to our programs.
What types of materials do students need to have at home for a STEAM Studio Session, and what will be provided?
We don’t provide any materials for the sessions. However, we do our best to work with items that are low-cost or no-cost. Many of the supplies you already have at home. Each STEAM Studio session will have a materials list to make sure you have the needed materials on hand.
If I have two children interested in a session in the same age group, must I register them both?
No, families are encouraged to attend sessions together and pay just one registration fee.
Can my child take a class not recommended for their grade level?
Yes, but your child should expect the material to be most appropriate for the grade levels listed.
What are the technical requirements needed to participate?
For most of the STEAM Studio sessions, there are no special requirements. You will need a computer with internet access. During the live online classes, a web camera and headphones are recommended but not required. If a session does require special technology, such as Minecraft, the technical requirements will be listed in the session description.
Would you explain more about earning digital badges?
STEAM Studio sessions are presented in a series of two or three workshops, and if a participant completes the full series, they'll earn a digital badge for that topic. They can post the badge on their page on our our online STEAM Community website.
Can schools, libraries or other organizations participate?
Sure, we'll work with you to create your own STEAM Studio session just for your students. Contact us at email@example.com to learn more.
